Hermes’ Labyrinth is a series of improvised duets for double bass, prepared and unprepared, and winds recorded live in the studio in the autumn of 2008. Each piece takes as its theme a scale, tone row, textural motif, or verbal suggestion, and develops it as it will—as sound finding its natural level within sound and silence.

oralhistory is based on spaces between conversation. What is important in any conversation is what is not said. No one listens. Time travel. Privilege of just listening to the space around these speakers. Recording artifacts (pops, crackles of physical media, digital glitches), the observer effect. The source oral histories themselves are amazing (do check them out) so perhaps missing the forest for the trees. I searched for interesting sound sources from oral histories at the U.S. Library of...

The path in the woods behind my house is not terribly efficient in terms of mileage from point A to B, winding around trees, hugging a creek, branches to overlooks. My fifth solo release at best shares some of these characteristics. While still focused on solo acoustic improvisation (sax and flute), other sounds have found their way into to some of these tracks. These include ambient nature, distant mike placement, a percussionist (Will Bryce), multi-tracking and manipulation via Audacity....

Solo improvisations on tenor sax, alto sax, and wooden flutes by Jimmy Ghaphery. Recorded somewhere in the Fall 2007 to Spring 2008 neighborhood across several different sittings in my living room direct to minidisc. Some intention was given to sustaining specific moods and/or soundscapes. On reflection use of silence must have been somewhere in my ears as well. This is my 4th solo recording, and the first net only release.

The title track was recorded during Hurricane Isabel in my living room in Richmond, Virginia, as the winds blew and we began our 10 day retreat without electricity. Soggy Carpet and Hex on soap are also indebted to Isabel; recorded after flooded carpet had been dragged out of my basement. Soggy Carpet finds me playing flute and Sam Byrd's Drum set. Hex on soap is alto. The remainder of the tunes were recorded in the basement after some new carpet remnants were tossed down. Up and out #1 and #2...

Stretching time, ideas, and texture. Listening patiently to repetition and improvisational counterpoint. Two long pieces clocking in at 90 minutes each, both using the same 90 minute guitar improvisation as a common layer. The first piece adds a repeated 45 minute clarinet improvisation with a ninety minute wooden flute improvisation in the distance. The second piece adds a series of themes for alto sax with liberal ornamentation. The final piece is a short 10 minute sax quartet assembled from...

Clifford Schwing (1985-2012) tenor sax and Jimmy Ghaphery alto sax. Saxophone duets recorded 2008, in a big empty front room with high ceilings in Jackson Ward, Richmond Va. The first piece is an open improvisation. The second piece is a composition by Cliff featuring silence and dynamics. At the end you can hear Cliff saying, "That didn't work out completely". The same evening we played a lot more in his backyard, but no batteries in the recorder. Very bittersweet to find these...
